Manufacturers are Listening

They have come up with many visually appealing options in this niche. From clean urn like designs, to simple black tall flower bed like containers, you have options to integrate into your own yard. Some will even allow you to place flowers on top of it, so it just looks like an option you selected to house your flowers, but it does double duty as a source of water.

Size & Needs

You will choose the size and whether more than one is required based on your demands. Although having more would require more space, beautiful rain barrels allow you to incorporate it into your style. What are some considerations when selecting a rain barrel?

Top Lid

The first thing to look for in a rain barrel is a lid. You want something that is tight fitting and won’t allow any water to leak out. If you don’t have a lid, then make sure that you get one that has a gasket around the top edge.

Material

A rain barrel should ideally be made of plastic. Plastic is durable and long lasting. It doesn’t rot or crack over time. However, if you live in a place where there is a lot of moisture, then you may need to consider buying a metal rain barrel instead. Metal is much stronger than plastic and will last longer.

Gallons

You want to make sure that you buy a rain barrel that holds at least 55 gallons of water (the typical rain barrel size). Anything less than that is not going to do you any good and not worth installing.

Drainage

When you install your rain barrel, make sure that it drains properly. If it does not drain properly, then you will likely find yourself having to empty your rain barrel frequently.

Rain Barrel Materials

Mesh

With standing water, you want to keep insects and mosquitos away from the water. A mesh is the perfect item to help keep them out and your water clean.

Stand

Having a stand under your barrel is key! When it’s elevated, it allows there to be more pressure to fill your water when you need it.

Overflow Hose

Rain barrels store water, but when full can cause issues. An overflow hose will let extra water escape and away from your house foundation.

Diverter

Getting the water in your barrel is as easy as installing a diverter. It moves the downspout water into the barrel for your later usage.
